The Taccani hydro-electric plant is a classic example of industrial archaeology, and was built by the architect Gaetano Moretti in 1906, in an elegant Liberty style.
Its construction and start-up made Trezzo sull’Adda, the leading new production and economy in the area. In order to build it, the waters of the Adda were crossed by a cement and pole construction (the Poiret dam) standing ten or so metres high, and directed through twelve inlets towards the turbines. After use, the water is returned to the river with a two-gallery drainage basin that opens up downstream beneath the castle.
The Taccani plant continues to produce energy today, and can be visited with a guided tour every first Sunday of the month, except for January and August, organised by the Trezzo Pro Loco group. |
